East Timor - Day 8

This morning the team woke bright and early for our last day in East Timor, a day of R&R, reflection and fun, along with 2 staff, Grace and Jipora.  We were at the airport for our MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) flight as the sun was rising, were weighed (!) and briefed by Jonathon, our pilot, then into the blue sky we flew. Grace was in the front seat, nearly jumping out of it with excitement!

Jonathon landed on Atauro Island beautifully, much to our shock, on a gravel runway.  He then left us while he headed back to Dili to pick up our 2nd group.

We met Barry who took us to his Ecolodge for breakfast, a boat trip and snorkelling, before visiting some local projects on the island. We found out that most of the children walk 9km each way everyday to get to and from school in the heat and we saw a lot of them doing this walk.

Lunch was an Italian pizza cooked in a wood oven, followed by a visit to another project with women making beautifully embroidered bags made on treadle machines.

Then it was back to the gravel runway for our short flight back to Dili and a Portuguese BBQ on the beach watching our final Dili sunset.
