Casa Vida, meaning “House of Life” opened in 2008 and is the first project of its kind in East Timor. Casa Vida cares for girl victims of sexual abuse, aged between 3 and 18 years. The house is located in the capital Dili, staffed by expert volunteers from Brazil and Australia and trained local carers.
Casa Vida works in conjunction with the Timorese Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health and UNICEF. It accommodates 80 girls who are receiving protection, counselling, education and vocational skills training, enabling their return to a dignified life and restoring their confidence and self-esteem.
The project also operates Kafe Aroma and Doce Vida Bakery in Dili, where the girls receive training and employment in hospitality. The cafe and bakery are popular with ex-pats and also provide a source of income for the project.
With limited resources, Casa Vida provides excellent care and rehabilitation for traumatised girls. RCF is helping fund the running costs of the homes in Dili.
